Mukesh Ambani could face probe over the construction of his 27-storey luxury home

Tuesday, August 2, 2011

Country's richest man Mukesh Ambani faces a possible central probe into the construction of his 27-storey luxury home -- one of the most expensive private residences in the world.

The Maharashtra state government is considering whether central investigators should look into alleged irregularities over the sale of the land on which the home was built, media reported on Tuesday.

The Reliance Industries chairman, who according to Forbes magazine is the world's ninth richest man with a $27-billion fortune, moved into the 570-foot (174-metre) tower last year.

" Antilia", on upmarket Altamount Road in south Mumbai, reportedly has six floors of parking, swimming pools, a ballroom, a cinema and three helipads.

Maharashtra Minority Affairs and Wakf minister, Mohammed Arif Naseem Khan, told the state assembly on Monday that the 4,532 square metre (48,782 square foot) plot had originally been reserved for the education of Muslim children.

Wakf in Islamic law is property or land reserved for religious or charitable purposes.

The plot was sold to Ambani by the Currimbhoy Ebrahim Khoja Orphanage Trust for Rs 215 million ($4.77 million) in 2002, the minister said.

The deal was approved by the Mumbai Charity Commissioner but the minister said permission was not obtained from the Maharashtra State Wakf Board, which oversees the maintenance and administration of Wakf property and land.

The dispute over the sale -- a widespread problem across the country and particularly in big cities like Mumbai where land is scarce -- has been rumbling since 2004 when the Wakf board asked Ambani why the land should not be returned to the charity.

The opposition leader in the state assembly, Eknath Khadse, of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), on Monday claimed that the plot was actually worth five billion rupees.

A Reliance Industries spokesman told media that the matter was between the Wakf board and the orphanage and had nothing to do with the company.

Recover deleted files - Pandora Recovery free tool

Thursday, July 28, 2011

Pandora Recovery is a free tool that provides an effective way to recover permanently deleted files. Pandora Recovery recovers files removed from Recycle Bin, files deleted using Shift + Delete.

Pandora Recovery very specifically recovers deleted files on drives formatted with the NTFS file system, not the older FAT or FAT32 file systems. If you're running Windows 2000, XP, or Vista, your hard disks almost certainly use NTFS. USB drives and camera memory cards rely on FAT-type file systems, so PR can't help you with those. If you need to rescue deleted photos, you'll want software specifically designed for photo recovery. PR also lacks some advanced features found in the more expensive file recovery tool. But, afterall - it's free :)

How does it work?
When you delete a file on FAT32 or NTFS file system, its content is not erased from disk but only reference to file data in File Allocation Table or Master File Table is marked as deleted. It means that you might be able to recover deleted files, or make it visible for file system again.

Pandora Recovery allows you to find and recover recoverable deleted files from NTFS and FAT-formatted volumes, regardless of their type - you can recover pictures, songs, movies or documents. Pandora Recovery will scan your hard drive and build an index of existing and deleted files and directories (folders) on any logical drive of your computer with supported file format. Once the scanning is complete you have full control over which files to recover and what destination to recover them to. You can BROWSE the hierarchy of existing and deleted files, or you can use SEARCH functionality to find a deleted file if you remember at least one of the following:
- full or partial file name,
- file size,
- file creation date, or
- file last accessed date

On top of that, Pandora Recovery allows you to preview deleted files of certain type (images and text files) without performing recovery. This feature becomes really important if you are forced to recover deleted files to the same drive. Currently you can preview files having several image file types (BMP, GIF, JPG, PNG, ICO,TIF, TGA, PCX, WBMP, WMF, JP2, J2K, JBG, JPC, PGX, PNM, RAS, CUR) and several text file types (TXT, LOG, INI, BAT, RTF, XML, CSS). Quick Viewer allows you preview file contents as text if it cannot find appropriate viewer for it. To use quick viewer you can select deleted file and or click the Quick Viewer icon or right click on deleted file and select 'Quick View'. Quick View will then display a preview of deleted file.

Installation Instructions:

To install Pandora Recovery please do the following:
1. Download the Pandora Recovery installer from here.
2. Run the installer on the computer you wish to use to recover the deleted data with. After clicking the link above, simply click RUN or OPEN when the dialog window pops up.

Download Pandora File Recovery

3 . Proceed with the installation.
4 . Once installation is complete run the software and follow the wizard to start recovering deleted data.

CAT 2011-One section less, 5 extra minutes

Monday, July 25, 2011

The Common Admission Test (CAT) is getting a format makeover.

The test, which holds the key to admissions to the 13 IIMs and other major B-schools in the country, will be conducted between October 22 and November 18, 2011.

Though the number of questions remain the same, CAT-2011 will have two sections instead of three, and students will get an additional five minutes to tackle them.

According to a statement released by testing agency Prometric and IIMs, the first section will focus on quantitative ability and data interpretation while the second will be on verbal ability and logical reasoning. These two sections will be implemented sequentially with separate time limits.

It will be a 140-minute exam. Candidates will have 70 minutes to answer 30 questions in each section, which will have an on-screen countdown timer. Once the time ends for the first section, they will move on to the second without having the option of being able to go back. Although new in the computer-based version of CAT, this format was previously used in some of the earlier paper-and-pencil years,".

The change is vital for the entrance test as admission to IIMs is based on sectional cut-offs. "This move is aimed at being student-friendly. There are many students who lose out on a seat as they would have failed to perform in one of the sections,".

An additional five minutes have been added to the existing two-and-half hours available to students. This includes a 15-minute tutorial that will guide students through the process. "Considerable effort has been made in maintaining a similar level of difficulty across papers. A small number of statistically and psychometrically validated questions are randomly inserted in each question paper as equating blocks. These will be used to assess post-test equality across the days,".

More details will be available on CAT-Website by August 8, 2011.

Multiple calls in Gmail

Google will now allow GMail users to make or receive multiple calls in Gmail.

Gmail users can now make second call by putting the first call on hold and talk on the second call. You can also switch between calls by just pressing the “Resume” button.

Receiving incoming calls while you're in another call is just as easy: you'll receive a notification of the incoming call and can choose to accept it or not. If you take the new call, the previous call will be put on hold.

Whether you make a second call or not, you can now put any call on hold — useful in case you need to talk to someone in the room or grab something off the stove. Just press the “Hold” button and then “Resume” to start talking again.

This feature works across all call types (voice, video, and phone); the only restriction is that a maximum of two outgoing calls to physical phones can be placed at once.

Mashable founder Pete Cashmore fight back on Google plus

Mashable founder Pete Cashmore fight back with google plus and they came with the decision that until google will not launch branded accounts on google plus, Mashable account on google plus will have the name as Pete Cashmore and his Picture as Profile picture rather than Mashable logo and name.

Pete said on google plus:

"Hey folks, it's Pete Cashmore, founder at Mashable. Everyone here at Mashable is extremely excited about Google+ and we're very pleased that our community has embraced it so quickly!

We chatted with the Google+ team today about their plans for branded accounts, and we've both agreed that while the Mashable community is very engaged on Google+ and we all have great fun joining discussions here, it would be better for Mashable to wait for branded profiles to launch officially before having a company presence on here.

Mashable will be launching a new business profile and building it up from scratch once business accounts are available.

This account will continue to exist, but going forward it'll have my name and picture, and I'll continue to post here.

What can you expect? A similar mix of tech news, discussions, questions and updates, with a strong focus on Google+ and its place in social networking. Now that it's just me on here, you can also expect a more personal tone, but I'm not planning to bombard you with cat pictures.

Unless cat pictures is what you want, in which case I'm all for it! :)

MP's take home salary is Rs 45 lakh per annum + other allowances

Indian government approves 200% MPs’ salary hike.

Now MP's take home salary is Rs. 45 Lakh Per annum + other allowances.

MPs on Friday responded to the Cabinet approving a 200% hike in their basic salary—from Rs 16,000 to Rs 50,000—by creating a furore in Lok Sabha. MPs have pegged the discourse on a salary hike to the basic component—one of the 16 parts of their compensation package—of Rs 16,000 per month, or Rs 1.92 lakh a year. This is grossly misleading. If values are imputed to the other 15 components of an MP's package, it works out to—hold your breath—Rs 45 lakh a year. And this is a conservative estimate.

MPs stay in prime locales. They fly business class. They, along with spouse and attendant, are allowed unlimited AC rail travel. Their basic domestic and all working expenses are taken care of. Anil Bairwal, national co-ordinator for the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR), says it's a myth that MPs get paid Rs 16,000 a month. "They don't have to pay for water, electricity, telephone, even Internet or travel. It's more or less free and the citizens pay for it," he said. ADR, an NGO that works towards strengthening democracy and governance, was founded by a group of IIM and NID faculty.

This is how companies calculate compensation, or what is called 'cost to company'. By a similar logic, the 'cost to government'—by extension, 'cost to taxpayers'—for an MP's salary would work out to about Rs 45 lakh. Under the terms approved by the Cabinet, it would be Rs 60 lakh, or 10 times their basic salary.

G+ now has 18 million users

Wednesday, July 20, 2011

Google+ is growing fast.

New data from Experian Hitwise shows that Google+ is growing fast.

If they are true, then Google+ plus gained a jaw-breaking eight million users since Google CEO Larry Page confirmed the Google+ user-base to be 10 million users in Google's 2011 Q2 Earnings conference call on July 14.

The web analytics firm has released its first set of data regarding Google’s new social network. While its data only extends to July 16, it provides a detailed picture into the numbers that are driving Google+’s growth.

Facebook on the other hand claims to have 750 million active users or about 732 million if the 18 million users mentioned migrated to Google+.
In recent polls conducted by The Christian Post, more than 40 percent of 10,000 people stated that they believe Google+ would dethrone Facebook as the biggest social network while the other 40 percent believed that Google+ and Facebook would co-exist.

"The following poll is an unofficial and unscientific poll aimed to measure how many Facebook users so far have definitely migrated to Google+."

Here are some of the most interesting stats from Experian Hitwise’s report:

  • As of July 16, Google+ is the 42nd most-visited social networking site in the US and the 638th most-visited site on the web.

  • According to Hitwise, Google+ had 1.8 million total visits last week, an increase of 283% from the previous week. Google+ has grown by a whopping 821% from the week ending on July 2, the first week Google+ was made available.

  • 56% of Google+’s upstream traffic came from other Google properties last week, with 34% of that traffic coming from Google.com. And 37% of its upstream traffic came from search engines, while 21% of its traffic was driven by email.

  • Google+ may not be as much of a sausagefest as some early estimates claimed. According to Hitwise, 57% of visits to Google+ were from males for the four weeks ending on July 16. That doesn’t mean that 57% of its users are male, but it’s a sign that previous estimates were off the mark.

  • Google+ is dominated by young adults. Its biggest age group for the four weeks ending July 14 was the 25-34 age bracket, which accounted for 38.37% of all visits. The week before, the entire 18-34 age bracket made up just 38.11% of total visitors.

  • Los Angeles, New York City and San Francisco are the most dominant metropolitan areas driving traffic to Google+. Other areas with a higher proportion of visitors to Google+ than the general online population include Bowling Green, KY, Portland, OR and Bend, OR.

The truth of the matter is that none of these stats are official and Google+ is still very new, so it’s anybody’s guess as to how accurate Experian Hitwise’s actually are. Still, we think the company’s numbers make sense. While Google+ is gaining in popularity, it is still minuscule compared to Facebook, Twitter, Zynga, Tagged or even MySpace.

Google Detecting Malware From Its End

Tuesday, July 19, 2011

Google has just announced something pretty interesting,  it can now detect if your PC is infected with malware. It’s a clever bit of code that just quietly watches for unusual activity. That it is using its own data to detect viruses and will as of today be using Google Search results pages to warn users if their computers are infected with a specific form of malware. At the moment it only detects one strain of malware, but since it’s transparent and non intrusive it’s a good thing. Also, this is only relevant to Windows.
Users infected with the virus, which is apparently rerouting traffic to Google and other sites through a proxy, will see the below warning.

So if you see this message, your PC is probably infected with malware. Google suggests some steps to remove it.This is the first time major search engine turns its results pages into what is ostensibly a malware alarm.

g.co: Google url shortcut

Here google has come up with url shortcut for google pages only.

Google has come up with the official solution of shrinking up long unwieldy URLs by launching their public URL shortner goo.gl, this will link only to official google products and services.

The shorter a URL, the easier it is to share and remember. The downside is, you often can’t tell what website you’re going to be redirected to. Google is using g.co to send you only to webpages that are owned by Google, and only it can create g.co shortcuts. That means you can visit a g.co shortcut confident you will always end up at a page for a Google product or service.

There’s no need to fret about the fate of goo.gl; and nothing is changing on that front. It will continue to be google public URL shortener that anybody can use to shorten URLs across the web.
